The consulting agreement is a necessity if you are working with multiple clients. It should lay out what the service
being provided is in detail, the time frames for each step in the process, as well as the agreed upon total length of the
agreement, a termination clause such as 30 days written notice, any guarantees you are providing, what proprietary
information may be used, if any, in the process of completing your assignment and all payment details. These should
include your bill rate, your schedule of payment, any bonuses (if applicable) and how they are to be paid.
A good friend of mine was one of the first risk management consultants in the US. He worked for mostly Fortune 500
companies so his average length of service was 2 years. He offered a 90 day trial period on the two year contract
with a "No-Cut" clause. After the 90 days were up, they couldn't cut him unless they agreed to pay the balance of
the agreement. Not a bad deal. Just something to think about.
